The Old Steampacket - A Heritage Reborn

Original Cheese Factory

The Old Steampacket stands on one of Nelligen’s key historic sites, shaped by river trade, timber production and village life for more than a century. After the original Steampacket Hotel was lost to fire in 1925, operations were relocated to the Clyde River cheese factory, built in 1905.

Expanded over time, the factory served as the Steampacket Hotel from the 1930s to the mid-1960s, supporting travellers, workers and river operators. The timber building has been part of Nelligen’s major periods of sawmilling, river transport and agricultural trade, offering a place to unload goods, share meals and stay overnight.
